“Physics is known to be one of the best scaling subjects for the BSSS curriculum in Canberra – and for good reason! Many students find this subject to be the most difficult; yes, sometimes even more difficult than Specialist Maths.
But that’s no reason to not study the subject, as it can actually be quite rewarding and interesting to learn.
Finish School Work Early:
Your teachers will typically hand out a unit outline as well as your school textbook at the beginning of the term. Using the outline as reference, it is recommended to get through this school textbook as early as possible in order to leave time for extra practice.
After all, if you want to score above average, you have to do ‘above average’ revision!
Use Giancolli Textbook:
The textbook we recommend to students for extra practice alongside school content is the “Giancolli Textbook” as the questions are incredible for practice and are specific to the BSSS Physics syllabus in Canberra. But one thing to note is that sometimes the SI units will be different to your school’s expected format.
Show all working and units:
Always remember to specifiy the correct units in answers for your Physics exams and show any/all relevant working out, as students often receive partial marks even if their final answer may be incorrect. The marking scheme is always very harsh for subjects such as Physics and Chemistry, and it is important to pay attention in class to pick up on hints your teachers will mention regarding the marking scheme.
Hone in on Practical Report Writing Skills:
The marking is even harsher for Physics Prac Reports, where barely anybody ever receives full marks for the assessment in Canberra. Your essay writing skills will come into play here, and if you are wanting to score high, you don’t actually need to pick a super complex investigation question. Rather, you need to focus on addressing in-depth all areas of the rubric (which will be your best friend); especially in the Analysis and Reflection sections.
With this in mind, Physics can boost your ATAR if you do well. Keep organised, make a study plan for each term, and balance your studies with your health.”
