“I ranked 1st in Biology assessments for Term 1 during my time in college, and I attribute it all to this one strategy – which I will (of course) be discussing below.
To recap, in Canberra, you will sit your Biology exams at the end of each term, assessing only that term’s (i.e. unit’s) content; as opposed to end-of-year final exams assessing knowledge acquired over the year – this does not apply to IB students, unfortunately!
Now let’s get into it…
The strategy that helped me top my 1st assessment:
Starting off with the obvious: you must pay careful attention during class as your teachers will often give hints as to what will appear on your exams!
You may be thinking since Biology is such a content heavy subject, you have to take lots of notes… WRONG! Or at least, kind of wrong… the one hack I used that saved me literally 100’s of hours was writing questions instead of notes into my Notion desktop app – which was like skipping straight to making flashcards.
For example, instead of writing “A chromosome is…”, I would write “What is a chromosome?” and then using the toggle function on Notion, hide the answer underneath. That way, by the end of the class, I would have revision-ready flashcards!
Your teachers will often upload a powerpoint before each class covering all necessary content. What I would do is: go through the powerpoint, make my flashcards on Notion and then when I walk into class, I would be able to follow what the teacher is saying comfortably instead of scrambling to understand the fundamentals.
That way, I can focus on taking extra notes mentioned in class that were not in the powerpoint, and ask questions about trickier concepts that would appear on the exam.
How to practice for exams:
But of course, memorisation using flashcards won’t be enough: you will also have to master application of all concepts, which can be done by completing the textook questions outlined by your teacher and completing multiple past paper questions.
For example, for Biology at Narrabundah College, using IB past exams is an excellent source of revision as the college follows the IB curriculum very closely.
Make sure you highlight questions you get wrong, take note of it in your summary sheet, and reattempt the questions closer to the exam day.
