“If we went all the way back to the beginning of college, I would never have imagined I would be capable of ranking 5th in Canberra by the end.

In fact, the road to this milestone and a 99.85 ATAR wasn’t so smooth.

The first term was especially difficult, as I had started Year 11 off by scoring less than 40% on my Specialist Maths… and I experienced severe burnout due to inefficient study. This is where my first piece of advice comes in:

Use the first term of college as an “adjustment” and “experimental” period. It’s alright if you don’t do too well starting out as you can always discount it towards your ATAR and/or drop the subject. After all, going from Year 10 to Year 11 is an overwhelming jump, so it is natural for students to struggle initially.

It’s also very easy to get stuck on your raw marks instead of considering the bigger picture.

For example, in my previous example, the average for the Specialist Maths exam was actually 30%! So while 40% is a bit of a concerning mark by itself, it was still above average. That’s why you should focus on your rank more than your actual marks.

But in reality, there’s no point worrying about scaling and ranks – just focus on doing your best in all subjects.

Speaking of which, you should create a timeline of your study plan during the school holidays for you to follow once you go back to school. You can do this by going through your college’s handbook online and seeing what topics you will be covering. 

Ultimately, your timeline should include when you intend on finishing the school textbook, what you will be doing for extra practice, when you will complete past exams, and when you will complete revision.
